Curriculum Planning

This section provides some guidance on planning in the Primary School Curriculum.

The curriculum provides schools with the flexibility to plan a programme that is appropriate to the needs, aptitudes and interests of the children. The curriculum enables schools, in the process of planning its implementation, to adapt and interpret the curriculum where necessary to meet their own unique requirements.

Detailed advice on curriculum, organisational and classroom planning is offered for each subject area in the teacher guidelines found on www.curriculumonline.ie. A collaborative approach is advocated, and schools are encouraged to involve parents, the board of management and the wider school community in the planning process, where it is appropriate.

Here you will find re-presented curriculum materials useful for planning. These developmental materials re-present the curriculum content objectives in a more user-friendly way.

The materials are available for English, Gaeilge, Mathematics, Science and Physical Education.

Please ensure you have the latest version of Adobe Reader installed to download and read this interactive file offline.

You can also download a curriculum overview wall-chart that presents the strands and strand units for all subjects here.

NCCA would like to acknowledge the work of the Primary Curriculum Support Programme (PCSP) and the School Development Planning Support (SDPS) who developed similar resources for curriculum support in the past. These documents, developed by NCCA, draw on the original work of the Primary Professional Development Service (PPDS). The PPDS designed and developed[Image Placeholder}
'glance cards' which highlight key curriculum content and the progression in objectives from infants to 6th class. We would like to thank them for their work on the early stages of our work in re-presenting the curriculum.
