Redeveloping the Primary School Curriculum - Update on Development Groups

Development Groups to support the redevelopment of the Primary School Curriculum continue to meet regularly. Members engage with extensive, rigorous research, and debate and discuss key messages and ideas from this as they progress the preparation of draft specifications for the curriculum areas from junior infants to sixth class.

The launch of the Primary Curriculum Framework by the Minister for Education in March 2023, heralded the redevelopment of the Primary School Curriculum in the years ahead. To support this work five Development Groups have been established with each working on a particular curriculum area. These areas include:
• Arts Education
• Language
• Social and Environmental Education (SEE)
• Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Education
• Wellbeing.

Comprising of teachers, researchers, and other stakeholders, the Development Groups have been meeting regularly to progress work in their respective curriculum areas. This work includes engaging with research, debate and discussion, and collaborating with, and listening to, contributions from school leaders, teachers, children and parents.

The work of the Development Groups will continue throughout 2023. Their immediate focus is on the preparation of draft specifications. These will be published for consultation with parents, children, teachers, school leaders and the general public in 2024. As developments progress attention will turn to the generation of materials to support the curriculum in schools.
