New Primary Mathematics Curriculum launched

Following the launch of the Primary Curriculum Framework in March this year, the new Primary Mathematics Curriculum has now been published. It sets out a fresh vision for children’s learning that is characterised by playfulness, creativity, challenge, risk-taking and problem-solving. It provides for an inclusive and child-centred approach to learning, teaching and assessment with an emphasis on engaging and playful approaches to maths learning.

To support teachers in using the new curriculum, the Primary Mathematics Toolkit has been developed and contains a range of supports, including mathematical concepts, progression continua and support materials. The toolkit will continue to be updated over the coming months. The new curriculum, along with the Primary Mathematics Toolkit, can be accessed on curriculumonline.ie.

During the 2023/2024 school year, school leaders and teachers will explore and become familiar with the new curriculum. Oide and NCSE will provide schools with a range of face-to-face and online supports for the introduction, enactment and embedding of the Primary Mathematics Curriculum. Further details of this support can be found in Circular 0039/2023.

The development of the curriculum is underpinned by research, consultation, deliberation and close work with teachers, parents and children. To find out more about how the new curriculum was developed, please visit ncca.ie/primary.
